Pore Size - What does it mean

Quite often someone calls, their doctor told them to encase their beds, they want to know what does “pore size” mean since it is an important factor in controlling allergens form dust mites and animal dander. Keep in mind you can’t see any of these allergens with the naked eyes.

The pore size is nothing more that the space between the individual fabric fibers where they meet. The bigger the pore size the looser the fabric. Cotton will always have a larger pore size than a cotton/poly blend or a 100% polyester.

Dust mite fecal matter and/or body parts (we don’t actually breathe in whole dust mites) ar around 10 microns. Pet dander and mold spores are about 3 microns. In order for a mattress encasing to be effective against dust mites it needs a pore size of 10 microns or less and 3 microns or less to be effective against mold and dander.

With that being said, all mattress encasing with a membrane are effective against dust mite, animal dander and mold allergens because they are water-proof. The non-membraned fabrics are effective against dust mite allergens and in some cases animal dander as well.

Wishing you the best of health
