Carpeting Is Not A Good Thing For Allergy Sufferers
If you have allergies then you don't need carpet in the house. It is bad for you.
I know that statement makes some people unhappy, especially carpet companies but it is the truth. Next to poorly maintained AC units, carpeting is the biggest contributor of allergens in the home.
Even though the carpet looks clean it is holding allergens from dust mites, mold, pollen and pet dander. It can't help it because the allergens floating in the air will eventually fall and land on the carpet. Every time you set foot on the carpet you are grinding them deeper into the fibers. What does not get ground it gets tossed back into the air.
If the AC unit is not working properly or the house in damp that will only add to the problem. Damp carpet provides an ideal environment for mold to grow. This is one of the reasons we don't recommend steam cleaning carpets. If they don't have a good extraction system it leaves the carpet damp and we all know darkness and dampness allows for microbial growth.
If you have carpeting make sure you vacuum with a good HEPA filtered vacuum early in the day. You also want to keep the humidity in check so have the AC serviced and keep the filters clean.
Wishing you the best of health

Hi Mike -
I'm an allergy ridden person and I do enjoy the carpeted areas in my home, thanks to a "probiotic" product called Chrisal Allergy Free. The idea of living with nothing but bare floors just didn't work for me.
Although carpet can be full of allergens - most allergy suffers do have some carpeted areas in their homes. That's why I researched and found a product that I can use on the carpeting, drapes, bedding and upholstered furniture. CHRISAL is applied in a fine mist. The probiotics actually reduce common indoor allergens(dust mite, pet dander and mold). Even though it goes on as a mist it reduces moisture - which is one reason it helps reduce mold.
I can't explain the whole scientific deal about probiotics - all I know is they work for me.
And yup - I eat live culture yogurt too! I think there is something to this probiotic stuff!
I can now site Indian style on the carpet and watch tv or roll around and play with my 2 cavipoos.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I took a brief look at the product and to honest I'm real clear on the claims they make. I will study it some more.
One issue I have with any product that you spray on the carpet to get rid of dust mite allergens is the simple fact a spray can't really get down into the fibers. I've had this conversation with the owner and head scientist with Alkaline Labs. We have used the ADMS and ADS spray on our carpets in the office (low pile commercial) and it works OK but the Xmite powder worked so much better. We had a medium pile at the house and the sprays lost it's effectiveness in a week or two.
Xmite carpet treatment is the way to go because it works better and lasts longer.

That stuff msziggy mentioned really got my attention. I found their website, but it does not have much information, just marketing materials and no MSDS to tell you what is in the product. I am always nervous to use something new because I don't want to be allergic. I am glad I removed all my carpets. Before I took the last carpet out, I used the X-Mite powder and that stuff worked. It was a job to apply the X-Mite powder, but X-Mite really took care of the allergens and even make the carpet look cleaner. I am still glad I don't have carpet anymore.

Hi,
Getting rid of the carpet was the way to go. We have found the Allersearch Xmite works the best of everything else we have seen. The other products Allersearch has, ADMS and ADS anti-allergen sprays will work some but the product just can't get down into the fibers of the fabric.

I had found that the favorite food of dust mites are human dander so we should be very careful. Bed sheets and carpets are the habitat of dust mites. We can’t kill the dust mites but we can reduce the number of them by cleaning regularly in our house, using HEPA vacuum cleaner, and washing the bed sheets and other possible habitat of dust mites with a hot water.
