For almost 20 years we have used vinyl as our choice for box spring covers. It was inexpensive, no need to spend a bunch of money to cover your box springs, and effective in providing protection against dist mites, bed bugs and other allergens. One of the complaints we have gotten over the years is that the vinyl covers smell. Sometimes for a day or two or in some cases for a week. The other problem we have had is finding ones made in the U.S.A.

Well we now have an alternative box spring cover made from SMS ,Spunbond/Meltblown/Spunbond Polypropylene, which is a 3 layer laminated material. Most people have seen it and did not know what it is. One of the big uses is in the medical field. Those gowns the doctors wear are made from it.

The SMS covers are perfect for box spring because they are light, breathable, durable and do not have that smell of vinyl. Each cover is fully zippered and double stitched.

Now vinyl box spring covers still have their place. Vinyl is very effective, water proof  and cost effective. The other thing is I feel vinyl is more effective when you are dealing with bed bugs. Some companies are selling SMS covers as being bed bug proof but I'm not convinced. I'll let you know what our research turns up.
