Dust Mite Covers that Last

I have been on a tear about things that don't last lately.  I am so over spending my hard earned money on things that are poorly made and don't last.

Now it is one thing to buy something that doesn't cost much money but doesn't pretend to have much value. Think of a vinyl shower curtain.  You don't expect to pay much for a vinyl shower curtain because you know the reason they don't cost much is because they don't have much value. They are just a rolled sheet of vinyl that will protect your bathroom floor and your pretty decorative shower curtain from water.

I have been trying to think how long I have had my current dust mite covers on my pillows.  I have had them so long I can't remember how old they are.  Since I have severe dust mite allergy, it is crucial that all my pillows, my mattress and duvet be covered in zippered dust mite proof covers.

I bought the all cotton dust mite proof duvet cover a few months after I purchased the wool quilt for my bed. That had to be the winter of 2006, so it was the end of 2006 or the beginning of 2007.  It comes off and gets washed every few months.  It is still in great shape.  It does a great job of protecting my wool duvet and me from dust mites and other household allergens.

But the zippered dust mite proof pillow covers on my bed have been there so long I really don't remember when I got them.  They are for the most part 100% cotton.  We've been selling those for years and years.  I wash those about every 6 weeks.  Now, I admit, I don't wash them in hot water.  I wash them in cold water and just add some De-Mite to my laundry detergent.  Still, they have stood the test of time..

I am on my second Linen dust mite cover for the bed.  I confess I ruined the first one by washing it improperly.. I learned my lesson, you can't put a coated fabric cover in a hot dryer. It causes the fabric and backing to come apart.  I think I ruined my first one in 1999 or 2000.  Since then, I have used the low setting in the dryer and my cover still works well. I really can't blame the manufacturer on the problem with the first one.  Sure wish I could, but instead I confess to doing the deed personally.

Sure wish everything I had lasted like my dust mite covers.

Til next time!
