Allergy Cover – Which One Is Best – Membrane or Membrane Free

Which allergy mattress is cover best for you? That depends on what you are looking for it to do.

All of the allergy cover we carry will protect you against dust mites, pollen and mold spores. In most cases any allergy cover sold will do that. Don’t get me wrong, not all covers are created equally.

The membrane free allergy mattress cover is by far the lightest and coolest. Our Pristine cover is made out of a specially processed polyester which makes it have the smallest mean pore size (2.8) of all our fabrics. The down side is some people don’t like polyester because it makes them hot. A polyester allergy cover does not breath as well as the 100% cotton cover will.

Both Allersoft cotton and Allersoft Organic cotton allergy mattress covers are cool and light. They do a great job of protecting you and your mattress from dust mite allergens.  The problem with cotton is you can’t get the pore size (4.91) as small as the pristine but as I said that is still small enough.

The Allersoft Blend is 60% polyester and 40% cotton so the pore size of this allergy cover is 3.9 microns. Once again more than small enough to give you complete protection.

Price wise, anything organic will cost you extar since more has gone into growing and manufacturing the cover. The pristine allergy cover is the most expensive of the non-organic covers followed by the 100% cotton and then the Allersoft Blend.

Since all membrane free allergy covers we carry are effective the decision you have to make will be based on budget and fabric.

If you are looking for a cover that is water-proof or effective against bed bugs then you will want to look at our Lined cotton poly or Stretch Knit Polyester bed bug cover.   In most cases we recommend theses type of allergy covers for children’s beds simply because they can put up with the abuse and the urethane membrane makes these allergy covers water-proof.

The cotton poly has a nice feel to it and in most cases does not make the sleeper hot. The stretch knit bed bug cover was specially designed for bed bugs but works just as well for dust mites and other allergens.

What allergy cover do we have on our bed? We have a cotton poly cover on the mattress, 100% Allersoft cotton on our comforter and a mixture of fabrics on the pillows. My favorite allergy cover is the organic cotton because the more I learn about the various chemicals used in products the less I want to be around them.

Zippered Mattress Covers are Not Just For Dust Mites Anymore…

For years we have sold zippered mattress covers to our customers to help them with their dust mite allergies. They had gone to the doctor, went through the tests, were told they were allergic to dust mites and they need to cover the mattress. We also sold the zippered covers to people who are looking for something waterproof to put on the mattress.

Now days we are selling more zippered covers to customers that are having to deal with bed bugs or just want to keep their mattress and pillows cleaner. Now not all zippered covers are effective against bed bugs. We don’t recommend the non-membrane covers for the mattress because bed bugs can chew their way through the fabric. In fact one of our manufactures has developed a line of mattress covers with the help of the pest control industry that is bed bug specific. These zippered mattress covers are on our bed bug covers page.

If your concern is protecting a mattress against moisture we suggest you use one our membrane fabric zippered covers. The membrane is created by a urethane coating on the back of the fabric. This coating makes the fabric water-proof yet keeps it from being hot like vinyl covers can be. These type of zippered mattress covers are perfect for kids – baby to collage – beds.

One last thing I want to point out is any zippered cover will help to keep your mattress and pillows clean. I read a study once that said a mattress can double in weight in 12 years. That is a lot of dust mites, parts and feces in the mattress. And while I’ve never had my mattress professionally cleaned I don’t know of any vacuum that can remove the allergens and dust mites from the middle of a mattress.

The simple solution to keep your mattress free of pests and clean is to use zippered mattress and pillow covers.

Back to School – Make it Allergy Free

Every year at this time parents begin to send their sons and daughters off to

Their first year in college. Student and parent are excited and scared at the same time because this is such a big event in their lives.
I know, 3 years ago our daughter left home for the first time to attend school and what  an adventure it has been. She graduated from UCF in May and now its time for another new  adventure. For parents with children who suffer from allergies and/or asthma it can be  particularly trying time. For years we have worked hard to keep them away from  the things that make them sick or uncomfortable such as: dust, pollen, mold, dust mites, animal dander, etc. Now they are headed off to live in a place we have very little if any control over. The good news is there are some simple things you can do that will help reduce the allergens their new homes.

Of course they will promise to keep their room neater than they did at home and do their laundry every week. Good luck with that.

While our daughter had a few problems  with her allergies, she pretty much managed to stay healthy throughout the years. Your children are starting out on a new adventure, one that they will remember and
benefit from for the rest of their lives. If they suffer from allergies or asthma you can  do a few simple things now that will help them all year long.
