How to Get Rid of Dust Mites in Stuffed Toys

If your daughter is like mine, she collected plenty of stuffed animals and other toys over the years. When she left for college it took 4 large plastic tubs to hold them all.
Everyday we talk to many Moms who are trying to clean up their kids rooms and the conversation always gets to the stuffed toys and how to get rid of the dust mites that are in them. In many cases its not so much a dust mite problem but more of a dust problem. My daughter kept most of hers in a net that hung over the bed and they just got dustier as every day passed.
The easiest way to rid them of dust mite allergens is to throw them away, just kidding. We have found that you can put a stuffed toy in the freezer for about 24 hours and then toss them in a dryer on air and get rid of most of the dust mite problems. Freezing kills the dust mites and drying beats the majority of allergens out of the toy.
Most stuffed toys are never the same when you wash them so freezing is a nice alternative.
Another thing we did was spray the Allersearch ADMS anti allergen spray on the toys she played with every month or so. The ADMS spray is safe for the kids and pets.
While you will never get rid of all the dust mites and their allergens you can reduce amount you and your family are exposed to.
Wishing you the best of health
